Tips for Preventing Sports-Related Dental Injuries

Posted on 8/1/2025 by Dr. Ashley Saulsberry
Football players diving and tackling one another causing a potential injury. Whether you're a seasoned athlete or just starting out, participating in sports comes with inherent risks, including dental injuries. These injuries can range from minor chipped teeth to more serious fractures and even tooth loss.

Fortunately, there are steps you can take to minimize the risk of these injuries and protect your smile. Here are some tips to keep in mind:

Wear a Mouthguard

This is the single most important thing you can do to prevent sports-related dental injuries. Mouthguards act as a barrier between your teeth and any external force that could cause damage. They absorb and distribute the impact of a blow, protecting your teeth, lips, tongue, and cheeks.

There are two main types of mouthguards: stock and custom-fitted. Stock mouthguards are readily available at most sporting goods stores and are relatively inexpensive. However, they can be bulky and uncomfortable, and they may not fit properly. Custom-fitted mouthguards are made by a dentist to fit your mouth exactly. They are more comfortable and offer better protection, but they are also more expensive.

No matter which type of mouthguard you choose, make sure it fits properly and is comfortable to wear. You should be able to speak and breathe easily with the mouthguard in place.

Maintain Good Oral Hygiene

Keeping your teeth and gums healthy is important for overall oral health, but it's also important for preventing sports-related dental injuries. Strong, healthy teeth are less likely to chip or fracture, and healthy gums are less likely to recede, which can expose the roots of your teeth and make them more susceptible to damage.

Be sure to brush your teeth twice a day and floss daily. Regular dental checkups and cleanings are also important for maintaining good oral health.

Avoid Dehydration

Dehydration can make your mouth dry, which can increase your risk of dental injuries. Saliva helps to protect your teeth and gums, so it's important to stay hydrated, especially when you're playing sports. Drink plenty of water before, during, and after your activities.

Be Aware of Your Surroundings

When you're playing sports, it's important to be aware of your surroundings and avoid situations that could lead to a dental injury. For example, if you're playing a contact sport, be sure to keep your head up and avoid making contact with other players' heads or elbows.

Take Breaks

If you're playing a strenuous sport, it's important to take breaks to rest and rehydrate. This will help to prevent fatigue, which can increase your risk of injury.

See a Dentist If You Experience a Dental Injury

If you experience a dental injury, it's important to see a dentist as soon as possible. Even if the injury seems minor, it's important to have it checked out to make sure there is no underlying damage.

By following these tips, you can help to prevent sports-related dental injuries and keep your smile healthy and strong.
