The natural look and feel of dental implants come with a great appearance, as well as the restoration of normal chewing and speaking functions.

Implants are surgically placed into the jawbone to replace missing teeth. After tooth loss, the tooth roots no longer stimulate bone growth in the jaw, and bone density is lost.

However, implants restimulate this growth, and prevent the sunken or sagging facial appearance that comes with tooth loss over time.

Dental implants provide a strong foundation for replacement prosthetics such as a single crown, an implant supported bridge, or implant supported dentures.

What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants contain three separate parts that come together to restore the entire tooth, including the root.

The Implant Post

This is the titanium post that is surgically placed into the jawbone to act as the tooth root. The implant post fuses with the jawbone in a process called osseointegration, which typically takes several months.

Once the implant has fully integrated with the bone, the abutment and crown may be attached to finish the procedure.

The abutment

This serves as the connection between the implant, and the replacement crown.

The crown

This is the visible part of the implant, a replacement tooth that is custom made to blend in with your natural teeth.

Benefits of Dental Implants

Dental implants offer several advantages over other tooth replacement options.

Improved Appearance

Dental implants restore the form as well as the function of the smile with the same look and feel as natural teeth.

Improved Speech

With the security of dental implants, there are no worries about slippage, a common problem with traditional dentures.

Improved Comfort

Implants eliminate the discomfort, and frequent refittings, of removable dentures.

Better Chewing

Dental implants function just like natural teeth, and allow patients to eat their favorite foods without worry.

Retain Natural Teeth

Implants don't require alteration of neighboring teeth, unlike a traditional bridge. The natural teeth are left untouched, and implants prevent them from shifting, which may happen after tooth loss.

Durability

Dental implants last a lifetime with proper care.

The Procedure

Implant placement is finished in several steps which take place over a few months.

Consultation

We examine the mouth and take x-rays to determine if you are a good candidate for implants.

Please note that patients who do not have the required bone density and jaw structure may require a bone graft procedure prior to implant placement. Not all patients are suitable candidates for dental implants.

Implant Placement

The titanium implant is surgically placed into the jawbone. This is done under local anesthesia.

Abutment Placement

Once the implant has integrated with the bone, a second minor surgery is performed to attach the abutment to the implant post.

Crown Placement

We take digital impressions of the patient's bite, and work with a dental lab to create a custom crown that matches the other teeth. Once the crown is finished, it is attached to the abutment and your dental implant is complete.

Dental Implant FAQs

What Are Dental Implants And How Do They Work?

Dental implants are tooth replacements designed to mimic natural teeth all the way down to the root. Our dental team at Magnolia Family Dental places a titanium implant post into the jawbone, where it fuses with the bone through a process called osseointegration. After healing, an abutment connects the implant to a custom crown, restoring a natural look and normal chewing and speaking function.

What Are The Benefits Of Dental Implants Compared To Dentures Or Bridges?

Unlike a traditional bridge, implants typically do not require altering neighboring teeth, helping preserve your natural tooth structure while providing a strong foundation for a crown, implant-supported bridge, or implant-supported dentures.

Am I A Good Candidate For Dental Implants?

Many patients with missing teeth can be candidates for dental implants, but a consultation is required to confirm. At Magnolia Family Dental, our dental team evaluates your oral health and jawbone using an exam and x-rays. Patients with insufficient bone density or jaw structure may need a bone graft before implant placement, and not everyone is a suitable candidate.

What Is The Dental Implant Process From Start To Finish?

The dental implant process typically happens in stages over several months. It begins with a consultation and imaging to plan treatment. Next, the implant post is surgically placed into the jawbone under local anesthesia. After the implant integrates with the bone, an abutment is attached, and then a custom crown is created from digital impressions and secured to complete the restoration.

How Do Dental Implants Help Prevent Bone Loss And Facial Changes After Tooth Loss?

After a tooth is lost, the jawbone can begin to lose density because the root no longer stimulates the bone. Dental implants replace that root function by integrating with the jawbone, helping restimulate the area and support bone health. This can help prevent the sunken or sagging facial appearance that may develop over time after tooth loss.
