Dentistry for Kids
A smiling young girl and her dentist high-fiving each other after a successful and fun dental visit.Your kids might not be afraid of the dentist but going is still an unpleasant experience for many children. They might worry about cavities, feel uncomfortable with someone poking around in their mouth, or simply not want to go. At Magnolia Family Dental we have a few tips for making sure that your child will want to come in to see us.

Make Sure It is Familiar

We often fear what we do not understand, and this goes doubly so for children. One of the best ways to get a child excited to go to the dentist, is to make them understand what is happening. Let your child talk to the dentist outside of the dental chair so that they can get familiar with them as not just a dentist, but a safe person to help make the appointment seem more fun.

Attaching some familiarity to the good experiences at the dentist's office will make your children excited to come to see us. It is better if they take a tour of the dentist's office too, and they can even ask the dentist to explain what is happening.

Attach Something Fun To It

Rather than making the dentist a boring activity, you can attach another fun tradition to it. Since you go to the dentist every six months, find something rare you can do that is fun for everyone. Pick a nice restaurant or maybe head to a nearby park. Attaching something enjoyable to your visits with us will help encourage your kids to want to come see us.

Educate them about oral health

Oral health needs to be understood if you want to make the dentist fun. For younger kids, you can play pretend dentist and make sure they are comfortable with the aspects of dentistry. Have them sit in a chair and get them comfortable with tools poking around in their mouth.

Focus on the process of what the dentist will be like. Show them what will happen and maybe even make a game out of good oral health. Something like no cavities gets a sticker or small reward.

For older kids, teaching them about dental health and what cavities are can often be enough to get them comfortable with going to the dentist. If you can show them how going to the dentist can only benefit their oral health, then they will get excited to go and keep taking care of their mouth.

Taking a child to the dentist can be stressful or worrisome for parents, but making sure that your child is excited about the trip can help make things easier. By educating your child about the dentist and making everything familiar, will help them want to go to the dentist more often. Especially if you attach a reward to it like ice cream or their favorite toy.

We have a fun, bright environment that will be exciting to your child and we are experienced in child dentistry. If you need help with making your children comfortable, then please call Magnolia Family Dental at (662) 929-0080 and we will be sure to set up a time where we can introduce your child to our office.
